Frequently Asked Questions

If you cannot find an answer to your question, please reach us at Admin@guardiansnetwork.org .

What does The Guardians Network do?

The mission of The Guardians Network is to provide access to reproductive healthcare in states where access has been stifled or limited due to legislation. We cover the cost of travel expenses to relieve the financial burden on those who are forced to travel to access healthcare. We cover the cost of flights, hotels, gas, meals, supplies, and other expenses that may come up along the way.

Is The Guardians Network legal?

Everything we do is 100% legal. It is not against any law to travel; in fact, it is a protected constitutional right.

What you do when you are traveling is your business. Traveling out of state to access healthcare is legal. However, there are still risks of harassment and other challenges along the way, so we want you to be safe while traveling. We have a safe system we follow, and we will help you along the way.

Does The Guardians Network cover the cost of the procedure?

No, not directly. However, we network with dozens of other organizations nationwide that do. We work with them to help you find the funding you need to get the procedure covered. Our role is to cover the travel costs.

What states does The Guardians Network work in?

We currently have networks set up in New Mexico, Colorado, Illinois, and Kansas to receive traveling patients. However, we have volunteers all over the United States.

Do I need to have parental consent to get an abortion?

That depends on what state you are going to:

  • New Mexico and Illinois do not require parental consent.
  • Kansas requires consent from both parents.
  • Colorado requires consent from one parent.

For traveling, we require that a parent or guardian accompany you on your trip in most states.

Unfortunately, there are many laws that prevent us from assisting minors, so we have to be very careful. However, there are organizations that specialize in helping minors obtain care. If you need assistance, reach out to us, and we can connect you with the appropriate organizations.

Is the abortion pill safe?

The abortion pill is safe and is about 95% effective when taken before 11 weeks. It's also very common— one in four people will experience an abortion before they turn 45 years old. These pills are used and taken by hundreds of people every single day, safely and effectively.

Abortion is illegal in my state. Will I get prosecuted for leaving the state to get an abortion?

No. Interstate travel is a constitutional right.

You have the right to travel outside of your state to access care. While states have attempted to prosecute people for doing so, such cases have always failed in court because they cannot override the right to travel. However, friends and family who assist you may be at risk due to laws that penalize those who help. It is safest to work with out-of-state organizations protected by shield laws, as they can provide assistance while ensuring the protection of everyone involved.

Will an abortion affect my fertility?

No, an abortion does not usually impact fertility or cause issues with getting pregnant in the future. On rare occasions, if an abortion or miscarriage does not complete and goes untreated, it can lead to complications that may affect future fertility. These complications are rare.

If you experience unusual symptoms following your abortion, seek medical attention. Reach out to your coordinator, and they will help guide you on what to do.

Can I bring someone with me on my trip?

You may be able to bring someone with you, but this will depend on the specific arrangements made for your trip. Please reach out to us to discuss your needs, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

I may need to bring my children, is that okay?

Yes. If you need to bring your children, we can most likely arrange for a safe person to watch them during your procedure. Our volunteers are screened and background-checked. Many of them are parents and grandparents who are willing to dedicate time to childcare in these situations. If you need to bring your children, talk to us about it—we may be able to help.

How safe is my information with The Guardians Network?

All information provided to The Guardians Network is stored on an encrypted server until the trip is complete. All communication is conducted over encrypted servers. No information is shared with volunteers or coordinators except for the first name you choose to provide.

Once your trip is complete, all records of your communication and information are wiped from our servers. Our goal is to allow you to move forward peacefully, as if the trip never happened. We pride ourselves on confidentiality and discretion.

Does The Guardians Network cover travel for gender-affirming care?

Absolutely! Gender-affirming care is part of reproductive healthcare. If you are unable to access gender-affirming care in your state, reach out to us—we will step in and help. All of the above answers apply to gender-affirming care as well. We will cover your costs, and you are protected by your constitutional right to travel.

You are not alone. We will also connect you with additional resources that you may not be aware of.
